Hall panelling with graffiti, mainly dating from the 18th C.
In 1882 the Trustees renewed the students’ desks and the old ones were used to provide panelling around the hall. These have students’ names carved into them (some upside down suggesting that it was done before it became panelling).
The oldest one is from 1723.
The oldest name is from 1723. Some students’ names recur, including in stonework under the arcade.
Some are beautifully carved so presumably this activity was not frowned on at the time.
Various projects have documented the names and locations of graffiti around the building. (Need to link these documents).
Various names (could list most common from previous projects).
