William Bamber (1844 -1891), headmaster at SJM school from 1873. Affirmation from Trustees' minutes.
Studied at Trinity Coll., Cambridge, where he knew C.T. Moore (rector of Appleby), who probably secured post as head for him. He died in the school of flu followed by pneumonia. Highly regarded as a teacher and preacher. He asked for his funeral to be ‘as plain as possible’ and the coffin was carried by villagers.
Lancaster, Lancashire (birthplace).
